Tito Gaona's sequined and velvet cape complements the VYC Christmas tree
|
The annual VAHS Holiday Luncheon was on December 5th at the Venice Yacht Club, which was beautifully decorated for the holidays. VAHS members and guests filled the room to celebrate the holidays while enjoying the scenic views of the harbor.
While everyone mingled, a video of the year's past events played on the big screen. President Frank Wright honored retired, long-time Board Member and VAHS member, Carol Bailey. Although Carol was not able to attend the luncheon, her daughter Kristen accepted a beautiful photograph of the 1927 Historic Venice Train Depot by photographer Liesl Walsh. The photograph was printed on canvas and framed to resemble a painting.
Everyone enjoyed a festive menu with local celebrity Tito Gaona as the special guest. Bill Haberthur introduced Tito and highlighted video clips of Tito's incredible feats on the trapeze. Although Tito spent his life traveling and performing in circuses all over the world, he always returned home to his beloved Venice!

Tito Gaona speaking to the audience
|
Did You Know - Tito Gaona came from the renowned Gaona Circus Family, a lineage of multi-generational performers led by his father, Victor Gaona.
A natural innovator, Tito transformed dreams into reality inventing moves such as the “double double.” His pursuit of excellence led him to the triple somersault, a feat only Alfredo Codona had consistently mastered. Tito caught his first triple in 1964 and went on to perform it with remarkable consistency, elevating the standard of aerial artistry.
Driven by ambition and vision, Tito set his sights on the ultimate challenge: the Quadruple Somersault, a move believed impossible in his time. With unmatched skill and determination, Tito Gaona became the first trapeze artist ever to complete the quadruple somersault, securing his place in circus history.
Beyond his personal achievements, Tito dedicated himself to mentoring the next generation, preserving the art of the flying trapeze, and inspiring countless performers worldwide.
After traveling the world, Tito always returned to Venice and settled down with his wife Renata and their daughter Victoria, where he teaches his craft to others at the Tito Gaona Flying Trapeze Academy.
Tito Gaona remains a legend — an innovator, a mentor, and one of the greatest trapeze artists of all time.

Ann Martinuzzi addressing VAHS members and guests
|
A recent Pop-Up Meet-Up was in the form of a book launch at The Island Bookshop. One of the VAHS centennial fundraisers is the sale of the reprint of a book first published in 1969 entitled Venice and the Venice Area, written by former Venice Mayor, George E. Youngberg, and W. Earl Aumann. This fifth printing centennial edition was curated by Mayor Youngberg's grandsons and is filled with additional photographs. It encourages the reader to take a scavenger hunt through the past one hundred years and see how Venice has changed. VAHS Board of Director Ann Martinuzzi spearheaded this project over the past eighteen months to bring this fifth edition to fruition. Thank you to Ann and her team for a job well done. A special thank you to Aimee Odette and Michael Rank, owners of The Island Bookshop, for graciously hosting the event. If you are interested in purchasing the special Centennial Celebration edition, they are available for purchase through our VAHS Shoppe - click on the link below to be redirected.

Ed Gates was a true friend of the Venice Area Historical Society. Quiet, good humored and highly resourceful, Ed served on the Board of Directors for many years, including as Chair of the Finance Committee.
Ed's true passion was the Depot, and he was a long-serving member of the Depot Committee. Not long after he joined the Society in 2006, he became a Depot docent, soon taking on the duty of scheduling 20 to 30 docents. He became the trainer for new volunteers, developing his own materials, thus ensuring that all recruits knew what they needed to know to be their very best. He developed and delivered private tours of the Depot, often for very large groups.
Ed’s tours were always enlightening. His preparation frequently went above and beyond expectations, including interesting, meticulously researched historical facts. When visitors and docents heard a loud “ALLLL Aboard,” they knew that Ed was on duty!
Ed played a major role in annual Venice Museums Day activities. Working with local train modelers, with whom he shared a common interest, Ed developed fun activities for the many children and parents who visited that day. For this and other special events, Ed would wear his railroad bib overalls.
Finally, Ed served on the Circus Car Oversight Committee, working tirelessly to complete the project. Once again, his past experiences and interpersonal skills were key. Ed remarked many times that, of all his volunteer activities, this was the project he was most proud to be associated with. VAHS is proud of its long association with Ed Gates, a member who will be truly missed.

ALL ABOARD!
VAHS and its Education Outreach Team have been meeting, planning, promoting, and training guides to host area fourth graders and educators to the Depot Campus. Although fourth grade is the year students focus on state history, VAHS welcomes all students to learn about our compelling Venice history.
School tours will rotate through six different stations:
- Depot's Waiting Room I
- Depot's Waiting Room II
- Freight Room
- Gunther Gebel-Williams Statue
- Caboose & Deck Activities
- Circus Car Museum
The school tours will last approximately two hours and will take place on a Tuesday, Thursday, or Friday over the next eighteen months.
Additionally, VAHS has scheduled two Saturdays (January 31st and February 7th) as EDUCATOR DAYS from 10:00 am - 1:00 pm. Teachers and their families are encouraged to come and discover how the 1927 Historic Venice Train Depot promoted the development and growth of our city.
If any of these activities spark an interest, please contact Tom Bowers at tcsabowers@live.com for additional information.
The Centennial is a once-in-a-lifetime event, and our young scholars deserve to see and hear the Venice Story. VAHS is emphasizing the idea that everyone should become a “tourist” in their own city.

VAHS Salutes - Mark Stankard
|
|
|
|
|
Venice Area Historical Society has recently embarked on a long overdue renovation of the Caboose at the 1927 Historic Venice Train Depot.
Several volunteers stepped up to help during the renovation with Mark Stankard taking the lead. Mark brought his handyman skills to great use, and we are all proud of the results. Over the past year Mark has also trained as a Docent and has assisted with book raffles at the Betty Intagliata Lecture Series.
This quarter, VAHS is saluting Mark Stankard for all of his contributions. Mark has lived full-time in Venice since August 2017 with his wife Kathy. He originally hails from the Boston, MA area where he and Kathy grew up and raised their family. He has three grown children and four grandsons who are now located on the east and west coasts of the country.
Mark was a civil/structural engineer and project manager whose focus was on public transportation systems. Retiring in December 2022, Mark now concentrates on the things he enjoys, which include outdoor activities such as hiking, biking, pickleball (started in Venice), and traveling. He also likes house projects, antique cars, and animals of all kinds.
Mark is a life-long musician and has played keyboards in local cover bands both in Massachusetts and in Florida. He continues to enjoy this hobby as a member of the Slick Willy Revival Band. Along these lines, he is accomplishing a “bucket list” item by learning to play the saxophone.
Mark has volunteered at local non-profit organizations in the past and has served as a board member and a staff member doing hands-on work. Since he always enjoyed history and museums (and railroads for that matter), volunteering at VAHS gives him the opportunity to learn more about local history while giving back to the community, both of which are very rewarding. He is a docent and also enjoys getting involved in improvement projects such as the caboose renovation and hopes to continue to help the Society thrive.

For many years, the Caboose served as an office and storage location for the VAHS Collections and its documents. Many visitors to the Depot Campus have asked that it be re-opened to the public as part of our tours, and we agree.
Initially, the Caboose will be open as a learning station in support of our Student Outreach Program and will soon be open on regular tour days at the Depot. Long-term, the Caboose will house revolving displays highlighting historical events not adequately covered in our Depot and Circus Car Museums.
|
|
|
Before & after photos of the initial renovation of the caboose
|
Update: Phase II of the caboose interior renovations is completed! We have replaced the HVAC system, upgraded the electrical, repaired damaged sections of the subfloor, and installed new carpet tiles. All three door thresholds have been replaced for better weatherproofing. The interior walls and ceiling were repainted in the original interior color, and new baseboards were installed.
Phase III plans are being finalized and will include the installation of historical information panels which will discuss topics not covered in the train depot or Circus Car Museum and new showcases to display items from our collection. In addition, the exterior will be washed and repainted by a contractor. Lastly, the decals will be reapplied.
|
Our goal is to raise $15,000 for the project. Your donation will help to make this renovation a success. To donate to this project, please click the Caboose Renovations button below.
